What is a Root Canal?

Root Canal Treatment is needed to save a tooth when the pulp, or the soft inner tissue of a tooth, becomes infected or exposed. The process involves removing the infected pulp, which is made up of nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels that help the tooth grow, in order to eliminate the bacteria, prevent reinfection, and save the natural tooth. The injured or infected pulp is first removed, and then the root canal is thoroughly cleaned and then filled and sealed. This usually involves local anesthesia and can be completed in one or two visits, depending on the treatment required.

What are the Signs of a Compromised Tooth?
  • Visible injury or swelling of the gum
  • Pressure to a tooth that causes pain
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the source is removed
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Tenderness in the gums
  • Tooth pain that interrupts sleep
  • Spontaneous, throbbing tooth pain
What happens after Root Canal Treatment?

It is completely normal to experience some discomfort after root canal therapy. There may be biting or chewing sensitivity, which typically subsides in a few weeks. Dentists often recommend a pain medication be started before the freezing wears off. After root canal treatment, a tooth becomes weaker and more likely to fracture. To strengthen the tooth following treatment, it is almost always recommended to crown the tooth once healing is complete.
