What is a Bone Graft?

A bone graft is a surgical procedure that addresses jawbones that are not thick or strong enough to support dental implants, due to gum disease, previous extractions, or injuries. It does so by replacing inadequate or missing bone volume with materials of a different source, creating a more solid base for the implant, and also encouraging natural bone growth. The healing can take up to 9 months, but if you only need minor bone grafting, this can be done at the time of dental implant surgery. Your SmileCode dentist will discuss with you whether you need a bone graft during your initial consultation.

Reasons for Requiring a Bone Graft?

  • Gum Disease
  • Tooth development defects
  • Denture wear
  • Injury or trauma
  • Missing teeth
  • Past dental procedures that did not restore natural bone

What is a Socket Preservation?

Socket preservation is a type of bone graft used in dentistry. When a tooth is extracted, a small hole is left behind in the jawbone where the tooth once was. Socket preservation fills the socket or hole with a material that can heal into solid bone. This improves the appearance of the remaining teeth and gums, and it makes the process of getting a dental implant (at some point down the line) far less complicated. For best results, a socket preservation bone graft should be placed at the time of tooth removal.

What is the process of a socket preservation?

  1. Following a tooth extraction, material (usually a bone substitute) is placed in the tooth socket.
  2. The socket is covered with a membrane barrier and then sutured closed.
  3. Approximately 30 days after the procedure, the barrier membrane is either removed, or it absorbs into the remaining tissue, and the area of bone covers with new gums.

Benefits of socket preservation?

  • Keeps your facial structure by preventing sagging cheeks and jowls caused by a loss in bone height from the tooth extraction
  • Promotes healthy gums that allow for future tooth preservations
  • Promotes a healthy jaw bone by reducing the chances of complications like infection
  • Prevents the teeth from further shifting
  • Helps protect against tooth sensitivity by covering up exposed tooth roots on neighbouring teeth that can be exposed after a tooth extraction, and can be very temperature-sensitive
